Falling Forward

Today I looked at my "last published" date on my blog and was shocked. Shocked! "January 25, 2012" it said. That was over seven months ago - so much has happened since January of this year that I barely remember what I was doing when I published that post. Please excuse my silence here - I just had a chance to catch my breath.

For the past 12 months my life has been a bit crazy. In the past, I never understood the phrase "My life was turned upside down" - now it has become my mantra. Life - mine at least - has been unsteady, unpredictable and batshit crazy for an entire year. From a critically ill father to a new career to school to postponing grad school to going back to my former job to remodeling my house, I feel like I have hit tons of life milestones this year save for getting married (done it!), having a baby (maybe one day) or getting divorced (no thanks!).

That's not to say that there hasn't been great things this year. In February, my group of friends grew by one adorable baby person named Samuel. We are now the proud aunts and uncles to such a great little dude - he is even crawling now! My father is making small but important steps toward recovery. My mom, sister and I have become a lot closer because of my dad's illness. My husband and I have supported and comforted each other through the hardest year we have experienced together.

When things are so consistently tough, the people in your life tend to step up or step out. I feel lucky that everyone in my life is in the former category. We've lost people this year. We've gained people this year. We've all been through the ringer and are now coming out the other side.

This fall, I think we've all earned a new dawn. It's time to move forward, to gain some ground, and to achieve some balance. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some steady, quiet time and a hot cup of tea. What will you look forward to this fall?

"Some steady, quiet time and a hot cup of... Eggnog Latte!"

Yeah, this year has been bat-crazy for me, too. My in-laws are beginning to show their age, and I learned all about a new auto-immune disorder - when I was diagnosed with it, after my doctor sent me to the ER! I am becoming far too familiar with the layout of Methodist Hospital, as it took a whole lot of visits to keep me alive through the summer (and I am getting ready to potentially start a whole new journey, as I have been referred to a cardiologist.) I figure my wife has earned her halo and wings many times over, having to deal with all this at once. Fortunately, Son has stepped up and ably assisted her.

Let's all continue to pray that folks keep getting better, and that the weather cools off for a few months!

Glad to see you writing again Sarah, and take care.

Welcome back. My life hasn't been crazy, but I took a whole year off posting on my blog. I was pouting because of work issues.

Thanks guys! Ed - I am so sorry to hear about your illness and hard times this summer! Please know you are in my thoughts - I know this can't be easy, but I hope it will be better soon.

K2 - I hear you! I am also a pouter!

I'm so glad that you've survived this tough time, that you've become stronger and your friends and family have been close. Hurray for being able to catch your breath :) And congratulations to you and Ryan on becoming an aunt/uncle! Tiny people are pretty amazing (particularly when you can hand them back when they start to freak you out a bit).

What will I look forward to this fall (/spring)? I think I need to start looking for another job - the stress of the one I have at the moment is actually making me physically sick. I also want to start sewing for myself again (as opposed to everyone else and their children!)

AMANDA!!! I am so sorry I didn't see this comment until now!! Ugh - quit that job girl! Life is too damn short to be miserable. You are too smart and talented to be made sick by sucky work!

Can't wait to see all the beautiful things you make - I'm getting back to making too!

Yay! Hot tea and mulled wine for everyone.

Keep taking good care as you inevitably keep moving forward. I'll keep checking back periodically to see what you are up to and hoping to bump into you in the Heights for a quick hug.

Much love!
